Río Muni was added in 1856 to create Spanish Guinea. The harsh plantation system practiced during the colonial era attracted much international criticism. Independence in 1968 began under the dictatorship of Francisco Nguema, who was overthrown by a military coup in 1979. Severe economic decline has been experienced since the 1970s. Although political pluralism was restored in 1993, allegations of abuses of human rights continue and the 1993 elections were condemned by Western observers.</span></text>
